The Best of Girl Talk

17 08 2010

Richard Loring has arranged the hits and highlights of his hugely popular ‘Girl Talk’ shows into a brand new musical for the festive season. ‘The Best of Girl Talk’ stars an exciting line-up of all-girl South African talent. Hayley Francis, Vicky Friedman, Renee Hunter and Eve Meyer are backed by a four-piece band, led by Lolly Sonmez on keyboards. The show spans three decades of pop divas and will have you up on your feet and rocking in the aisles.

The Ghymes Ensemble

2 04 2010

A group of musicians at a teachers’ college in Slovakia, involved in everything from rock to classical to Renaissance music, formed this Hungarian folk band in 1984. From this offbeat beginning, Ghymes has gone on to tour the world with great success. The band uses more traditional instruments, like violin, hammer dulcimer, Hungarian bagpipes, lute, kalabash zither and Turkish pipe, but also throws in some saxophone, drums and synthesisers. Their repertoire has expanded beyond Hungarian to include folk from elsewhere in Eastern and Southern Europe.

Respekt Ball

24 03 2010

Balls are big in the Czech Republic – the social high point of the winter season, actually. Dating back to the Habsburg days, courtesy of Vienna’s upper classes, formal dress balls are a much-revered tradition. Which is probably why everyone lets their hair down for this one, held at the Archa Theatre. Unlike the stuffy dances held at old-world venues, the Respekt Ball is named after an irreverent Czech magazine and features the best of local rock bands. Accompanying the waltzes tonight will be MTO Universal, the Ondrej Stindl band and other surprises the theatre is keeping quiet about.
