Debuting this year amid more new nightspots than South Beach has ever seen, Level has the personnel, parties and square footage to rise above all else in clubland. Led by nightlife impresario and fashion designer Gerry Kelly, this huge yet versatile space hosts everything from the grandest of bashes and the smallest soirees. Thursdays offers a fashion showcase; Fridays is gay night and Saturday is all reggae. A bush schedule for sure.

Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre
24 06 2010Warwick Road, SW5 (020 7373 8141)
Earl’s Court tube. Box office 9am-6pm Mon-Fri; 9am-2pm Sat. Admission ?5-?50. Credit MC, V.
The clue is in the
name: it’s an exhibition centre, and so was not really designed to host
live music. To cynics, that’s putting it mildly: horrendous acoustics,
overpriced concessions and slightly less atmosphere than the moon make
this one you might want to avoid.

L’Hermitage
10 06 2010If you’re looking for an alternative to the chains that dominate the area around the Gare du Nord, this inconspicuous bistro is a good bet. The long dining room with its tapestry chairs and brocaded walls is looking a little sad, but Mr and Mme Bergeron in the salle and chef François Déage are serious about their food. They serve traditional regional fare with modern flourishes. Start with green asparagus and a well-textured duck terrine served with fig chutney, then a succulent sea bass fillet served with a creamy French-style polenta purée. Desserts are all homemade.

Short Shakespeare! Romeo and Juliet
28 05 2010Give kids a break from those Saturday morning cartoons with a shot of short Shakespeare. A 75-minute abridged performance provides a good introduction to the Bard and is a popular family outing. This production, adapted and directed by Kim Rubinstein, presents Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers falling in love in a world torn apart by their families’hatred. Audiences have the opportunity to join members of the cast in a 15-minute discussion after every performance. The seven-storey courtyard-style theatre opened in 1999 and is modelled loosely after The Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Blush
25 05 2010Club Central continues to grow with the opening of Blush. Created by the team behind the phenomenally successful Phi-b – which has punters spilled into the streets most nights – Blush has its own identity, with an island bar and cool décor. Its staple diet of music will be from top local DJs playing at regular theme nights, but international DJs will be flown in for special parties. It’ll have to be good to fight off the competition…

Football: Real Madrid V Osasuna
20 05 2010Looking dead certs to win the league only a month or so ago, and still enjoying a five-point advantage at the top of the table, Real Madrid look to be faltering at home and in Europe. Still winning games despite unconvincing play – a sign of potential Champions perhaps?- club and fans are haunted by memories of disastrous run-ins and near-misses of not so long ago. Osasuna, on paper a pushover, are fighting for their first division lives and could be very unobliging playmates in the Bernabeu this weekend.
