After dressing up in clothes from the royal wardrobe, children are given a role – may it be drummer, royal family member or entourage – and then explore and search the palace for all its hidden secrets…

Richard Loring has arranged the hits and highlights of his hugely popular ‘Girl Talk’ shows into a brand new musical for the festive season. ‘The Best of Girl Talk’ stars an exciting line-up of all-girl South African talent. Hayley Francis, Vicky Friedman, Renee Hunter and Eve Meyer are backed by a four-piece band, led by Lolly Sonmez on keyboards. The show spans three decades of pop divas and will have you up on your feet and rocking in the aisles.

San Francisco based Michael Light trawled through 32,000 photographs taken of and on the moon during the years of the Apollo Missions to select the 100 that appear here. Some are as familiar as the footprint in the lunar dust, others have been rarely sighted before but all of them produce a sense of awe. The technical quality of the images is excellent and, considering all of the photographers were by amateurs, the artistic sensibility is exceptionally high.

In one of the Hofburg’s periodic attempts to enliven a visit to the rather dreary state apartments, an exhibition has been running since mid-October offering an interesting vision of the luxury and splendour enjoyed by Austria’s imperial family. Through photographs of the various summer villas, palaces and hunting lodges, visitors are presented with a behind-the-scenes view of Empress Elisabeth’s favourite haunts. This show is strictly for monarchic nostalgics.

House of Lucky

Frank Wortham’s solo show ‘House of Lucky’ was last seen in San Francisco at The Marsh, a production that earned him two Bay Area Theatre Critics’ Circle awards. Now he and his play return, this time to the Magic Theatre, bringing the rousing, spoken-word style performance about the trials and tribulations of San Francisco life for a struggling artist. It is full of gossipy, knowing insight but you do not have to live here to appreciate it – its themes are universal.

Comedian Tommy Chong, best known as the dazed and confused hippie sidekick to comedy partner Cheech Marin, surprisingly has a background as a country-western and R&B guitarist in Canada’s Dog Patch. Son of Chinese and Scotch-Irish parents, Chong played in Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, where he co-wrote ‘Does Your Mama Know About Me’, later recorded by the Jackson 5. In the 1960s, Chong launched his comedy career in the least likely of places – a lapdance bar owned by his brother – before going on to become a comedic icon of the stoned era.

This private, predominantly Renaissance collection, housed in an opulent residence once owned by industrialist Henry Clay Frick, is more like a stately home than a museum. American architect Thomas Hastings designed the 1914 building in 18th-century European style. The paintings, sculptures and furniture on display are consistently world-class, among them works by Gainsborough, Rembrandt, Renoir, Vermeer, Whistler and the French cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener. The indoor garden court and reflecting pool are especially lovely.

Housed in the ICAIC building, this large, well-kept cinema shows some of the best films in Havana. It specialises in arty offerings, although major premières have also been held here. The foyer has an exhibition of posters advertising some of the great Cuban films from the decades since the Revolution. Posters and videos of the best Cuban films of the last 40 years are on sale on the fourth floor.
