Mysterious millionaire Dr Rau sold his family firm to become a doctor in Africa, alternating noble causes with visits to European salerooms. Now the remarkable collection, which he has left to Unicef, goes on show for the first time. Spanning six centuries and all of Europe, the first half reveals a dramatically foreshortened ‘David Beheading Goliath’by Guido Reni and Dutch landscapes, the tiny, intense ‘Judith’by Lucas Cranach and the powerful ‘St Dominic’by El Greco. The second half looks to Impressionists, Symbolists, the Nabis, Fauves and the melancholic ‘Clown in Green’by August Macke.

Antony and Cleopatra
17 09 2009Now in its 14th year, age cannot wither Shakespeare in the Park, nor custom stale her infinite variety. This year, the production tackles the sexy ‘Antony and Cleopatra’. Like Las Vegas, Shakespeare’s legacy is past the size of dreaming, making his plays the perfect foil to the radiant city. Citizens flood this free event in a wash of pricey wine and blocks of cheese, so while the play is most certainly the thing, engaging theatre takes place both on and off the stage. Arrive an hour early to secure your spot and enjoy a Green Show of madrigal singers, jugglers and other Renaissance Faire festivities.

Hispana
13 09 2009Housed in the grotesque golf ball of the International Convention Centre Hotel across the river from the Bund, Hispana is the only obvious mark the new hotel management (Spanish tourist chain Barcello) has made on the hotel. Not much else you can do with a place that was built for one conference only – the Fortune 500 in 1999. Nonetheless, it is worth the adventure into the folly to taste an excellent Spanish omelette, icily authentic gazpacho and deliciously moist paella that goes on for days.
