1900: Art at the Crossroads

30 04 2009

As MOMA continues to investigate the origins and fate of the ‘modern’, the Guggenheim weighs in with its own exploration focused on the dawn of the last century, particularly in Paris’1900 World’s Fair. Over 250 works on display explore the clash between classical academic painting and the various strains of the avant-garde emerging in Europe at the time, providing an exhaustive and compelling survey that takes in everyone from Degas, Cezanne, Monet and Rodin to Munch, Klimt, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Matisse and Picasso.

Picturing the Modern Amazon

20 04 2009

‘Picturing the Modern Amazon’combines images of women’s physical strength – in the works of some of the biggest names in contemporary art – to explore issues of pleasure and power in both art and popular culture. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, photographs, videos, sculptures, comic books and installations by over 60 artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Renée Cox, Nicole Eisenman, Annie Leibovitz, Mary Ellen Mark, Herb Ritts, Alison Saar, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney and many others. Live performances by female bodybuilders complete an experience that celebrates the transgressive power of the pumped-up female physique.
