Suburbano

29 12 2008

Suburbano, formed by Luis Mendo and Bernardo Fuster, have been together for 20 years and have made nine albums and 39 soundtracks for movies by various contemporary Spanish directors. Caring little for fame, Suburbano play their lucid, anarchic jazz mixed with pop and other influences with joyful abandon. Their recent album, ‘Veinte años y un día’(‘Twenty Years and a Day’) is a compilation of many of their well-known themes and they celebrate their 20th in the Café Central accompanied by Elena Robles on bass.

Il Cantuccio

26 12 2008

‘Cantuccio’is the local word for ‘biscotti di Prato’, the hard, almond biscuits that are traditionally dipped in Vin Santo. It is also the name of a tiny new shop in the Santo Spirito district of Florence. A stone’s thrown from the famous piazza, the shop specialises in all sorts of carefully-sourced biscuits, cakes, jams, chocolate, dessert wines and speciality coffees and teas. Excellent for an unusual present or plain self-indulgence.

Masterpieces from the Rau Collection

20 12 2008

This exhibition is something of a coup for the Yasuda Kasai (Yasuda Insurance) museum, as the extensive Rau Collection has never before left its Zürich home. It features 106 works from the collection, which trace the development of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century. While you’re here, take time to have a gander at the museum’s own resident masterpiece, Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, which it snapped up for a bargain £24.5 million in the 1980s.

Dug Out

14 12 2008

The latest expat watering hole of choice, this rowdy sport bar looks to be the star player of the season. With happy hour deals from 3pm-5pm, an unbeatable location just yards away from the Old Town Square, satellite match coverage and good old greasy, high-carb snacks to sop up Velvet and Kelt beer, how could it lose? It’s bright, noisy and gregarious – traditional sour and smoky pub owners take note.

Tuileries Funfair

11 12 2008

The annual Tuileries summer fair is now in place, with its big wheel in close proximity to the larger ‘Millennium wheel’on place de la Concorde. The usual log flume, adrenalin rides, shooting galleries, dodgems and merry-go-rounds are all present and correct. If you want to buy candy floss, look out for it under the far less promising name of ‘Barbe à papa’(Dad’s beard).
