Indian Summer

27 10 2008

With more than 600 items on display, this exhibition is a must for everyone who’s curious about the Native American way of life. Featuring clothes, masks, tepees and photographs and boasting a special multimedia section, it gives a fascinating insight into how 90 million people lived before being butchered by a merciless US army. Those who think Apaches are simply the name of US military helicopters or that Sioux is an idiosyncratic abbreviation of Susan will have their eyes opened during this five-month ‘Indian Summer’.

April March

24 10 2008

With the French pop music of the 1960s back in vogue in the virtual era, it was bound to happen; April March may sound a lot like Françoise Hardy or France Gall singing melancholy, sighing ditties about hopeless love in French and English, but she’s actually from LA and has turned something of a gag into a fine lounge act. Her third album, ‘Chrominance Decoder’, was produced by the Dust Brothers, and the faux-French chanteuse is now gracing all of Downtown’s most in-the-know record collections.

Hans Raphon: 500 years of the Passion Altar of Gottingen

21 10 2008

These intricate and masterful Gothic panels survived half a millennium of war and intrigues to make it to this Czech National Gallery exhibition. Only 13 of the original 41 panels painted by Raphon, a contemporary of Lucas Cranach, in 1499 were successfully sneaked out of Germany by monks fleeing the 30 Years’War, but what survives is as inspiring today, following a careful restoration, as it was when it was first unveiled.

Although it only opened a year ago, this bar is on the corner of the increasingly hip Place St Géry, guaranteeing it a constant flow of business. Its only drawback is that it has a reputation for slow table service, with the result that its best to place orders at the bar.
