Waiters are happily obsolete here, as plates of prime and nicely priced sushi parade along the bar on a conveyor belt. Whenever something tasty cruises by, just grab it and eat it. If you’re still hungry, grab some more. Your collection of fluorescent colour-coded plates are then tallied up at the end. Excellent and speedy service in a modern and spacious interior. Prices for two pieces range from G3.75-G9.75 (£1-£3).
The Bigfoot Lodge
20 09 2008Opened just eight weeks ago, the Bigfoot Lodge has quickly become a hipster hangout for the Los Feliz/Silverlake crowd (think ‘Swingers’, the movie). Looking like a cosy lodge circa 1960s, the bar is replete with oversized chairs, plush couches, big booths, a stone fireplace and of course Smokey the Bear. The entertainment ranges from French jazz and bop to lounge music during the week, and from soul to Latin funk and glam rock on the weekends. With its unusual décor and music, it’s a lot of fun and a great people-watching place.

The Reconquest of Europe
17 09 2008The reconquest referred to in the title of this curious, imaginative exhibition is that of public space – streets and squares – in European cities over the last 100 years. The exhibition begins with the films of chaotic European streets made by the Lumière brothers in 1897 – when architects gave no thought to people’s comfort when outside their homes – then continues with a series of comparative slides showing how different cities changed between 1910, 1970 and 1990, and ends with a selection of recent urban projects, taken from 27 European towns.

Triple X Festival
16 09 2008Meant to take place two months ago but postponed until now due to funding problems, Triple X – which takes place within various buildings of a former gas factory – prides itself as being at the cutting edge of global developments in the worlds of theatre, dance, music, art and electronic media. The expected acts/performers/mad geniuses are still to be confirmed, but their webpage will keep you up-to-date. Rest assured, you will see the future.

Gaixample
9 09 2008A popular area of Barcelona has recently become firmly established as a centre for gay nightlife, thanks to the opening of several new clubs, bars and restaurants. Located in the eastern area of the Eixample district between Aragó and Gran Via streets are no less than 11 gay venues. These include the popular Dietrich bar, the two Arena bars – which give seven per cent of their take to help the fight against AIDS – and the Aire, a male gay restaurant which has now become a bar for both gays and lesbians.

Le Tambour
4 09 2008Set in a seedy section of the rue Montmartre, this ‘zarbi’round-the-clock bar is easily spotted – it’s the one that looks like a Swiss chalet, its two-storeys shadowed by the six-storey buildings on either side. Inside it looks and feels a lot like a junk shop, with a fin-de-siècle glass screen here, a hideous lumpy green statue there, bar stools made out of old bus stop signs, coins set into the floor, an old post box set into the bar, shelves full of books and an ancient Métro map on the wall. The customers are a mixed bag too – on our visit, a heavy man with a handlebar moustache was bellowing out passionate opinions about art, ignored by the bar staff; we assumed he was a regular. The rest included a few men in smart suits, also clearly regulars, and a sprinkling of young student types writing letters. Drinks are reasonably priced and the staff are cheerful. One of a kind.
