Tvrdohlavi 99

30 08 2008

‘Hard Heads’, as ‘Tvrdohlavi’translates, is an apt name for this group of young, spirited and independent Czech artists. The likes of Jiri David and Petr Nikl, who both personify Prague outsider work, fill this Mala Strana exhibition hall (conveniently located just outside Malostranska metro station). Outlandish, jubilant and inspired are descriptions that fit most of these works, which reflect the current stream of indie Czech art rather well. In a city dominated by conservative or traditional works, a breath of fresh air like this one is not to be missed.

Midnight Berlin

29 08 2008

Although Berlin has grabbed more headlines in the world’s press than most other capitals in the last decade, German photographer Klaus Schiedt maintains that there are vast tracts of the city which are largely unknown. So he spent the past two decades snapping those quiet corners in the witching hour, revealing both the eerie sobriety and the immense beauty of the city’s architecture. Berlin has long been famed for the dazzling diversity of its nightlife but this exhibition offers an alternative glimpse of its nocturnal character.

World Brass Festival

15 08 2008

This festival frees the concept of the brass band from any relationship with mere ‘OomPahPah’and brings together a collection of bands from all over the world. Krishna Das & the Modern Light Music Brass Band from Kathmandu bring hypnotic rhythms to Hindi film music and Nepalese folk songs; the Romanian Fanfare Din Zece Prajini describe themselves as Moldovian turbo-brass; while the Macedonian Orkestar Braka Kadrievi – who provided the soundtrack to the Emir Kusturica Golden Palm-winning film ‘The Time of the Gypsies’– play a party music that swings between the melancholic and the insanely frolicsome.

The blue city of Kavala

3 08 2008

As I read various publications on Greece, I never seem to find enough about the Northeastern part of the country, and particularly about the blue city of Kavala and the emerald island of Thassos, an area where I was raised and, after having traveled extensively, I consider as having some of the most beautiful coastline in the world, along with unique architecture, a rich history, colorful traditions, incredible food, luxurious accomodations and endless cultural activities. Next time you plan a trip to Greece, check out Thassos. You will not be disappointed. Bon voyage.
