Getting around Venice

25 05 2008

Vaporetti (motorboat buses) cruise the Venetian waterways, providing an inexpensive, though less romantic, substitute for the gondole. They are perfect for travelling from your hotel to the Restaurants in Venice. Most principal boats run 24 hours, with less-frequent service after 11pm. A single-ride ticket costs L4500. If you plan to move around the city or are staying on one of the islands, consider purchasing an extended pass (24hr. biglietto turistico L15,000; 3-day L30,000; 7-day L55,000). The ACTV office offers a discounted L20,000 three-day ticket for holders of the Rolling Venice Card.

The pearl of Spanish Basque country

15 05 2008

Cool, elegant San Sebastian is for many the pearl of Spanish Basque country. The city gained international fame when Queen Isabel II, escaping from the heat of central Spain, made it her summer residence in 1846. Vacationers come for its world-famous beaches, tapas, and bars, as well as its strong sense of regional culture. The city’s green walks and parks, grandiose buildings, and attractive hillsides encircle a placid, fan-shaped bay and the pleasant island of Santa Clara. The gorgeous Playa de la Concha rims the pristine waters, curving from the port to Pico del Loro, the beak-shaped promontory which is home to the Palacio de Miramar. The views from both of San Sebastian’s s mountains are spectacular, especially those from Monte Igueldo. By day the countryside meets the ocean in a line of white and blue; by night Isla Santa Clara, lit by floodlights, seems to float on a ring of light.

Thirty minutes from the town center by bus, between a lush hill and a dark, gray-green bay, lies the town of Pasajes de San Juan. The charming fishing village’s wood-balconied houses and small bay crowded with colorful chalupas (little boats) make an enchanting time warp.
